How to Get More Google Reviews (Without Violating Google's Rules)

Google reviews are the strongest local ranking signal in 2026. This guide explains how to ethically generate more reviews — and which common tactics will get you suspended.

Review velocity — how many new reviews you're getting per month — is among the strongest local ranking signals in 2026. Businesses going from 2 reviews per month to 8 per month routinely move 3-5 positions in the Map Pack within 90 days.

But the path to more reviews is full of traps. Google's review policy has tightened every year since 2022, and businesses caught violating it get reviews stripped or, in serious cases, GBP suspended. This guide is the safe path.

What Google's policy actually says

Google's review policy boils down to four hard rules:

  • No incentivizing reviews. Discounts, free items, gift cards, raffle entries — all banned. Even "leave a review and we'll donate to charity" is banned.
  • No gating. You can't ask happy customers to review on Google and unhappy ones to email you instead.
  • No fake reviews. Reviews from staff, friends, family, or paid services are all banned. Google's algorithm is also surprisingly good at detecting these.
  • No buying reviews. Includes Fiverr, freelancer marketplaces, and "review generation services" that promise reviews from real people — all violate the policy.

Violations don't always trigger immediate suspension, but they accumulate, and Google sweeps the entire account when one is flagged.

What actually works

The single highest-ROI tactic is also the simplest: ask every satisfied customer, in person, while they're still in front of you. Not by text. Not by email. In person.

Wording that works:

> "We're a small business and Google reviews really make a difference for us. If you have a minute, could you leave us one? I can text you the direct link."

Then text them the GBP review link. ~40% of asked customers will follow through within 24 hours. That's an industry-wide benchmark across local service businesses.

A 5-minute system that gets you 8 reviews per month

1. Generate your direct review link once. In your GBP, click "Share Profile" → "Review form". Copy that URL — it's a deep link straight to the review form. 2. Save it as a text shortcut on your phone. On iOS: Settings → General → Keyboard → Text Replacement. Map "rrv" → your review URL. 3. At the end of every interaction with a happy customer, ask. Out loud. With the wording above. Then text them.

That's the entire system. Five minutes to set up. Compounds for years.

What about email and SMS campaigns?

These work, but at a much lower conversion rate than the in-person ask. A typical email campaign converts at 1-3%; an in-person ask at 30-40%.

If you do email/SMS:

  • Send within 24 hours of the service completing. Past that, intent collapses.
  • One sentence + the link. No marketing copy. No graphics. The simpler the email, the higher the conversion.
  • Don't send the same person multiple reminders. It triggers Google's filtering algorithm.

Reply to every review

Reviews aren't a one-way street. Google has confirmed via official announcements that response rate is a ranking factor. The cadence that matters: reply within 48 hours, every time, including 5-star reviews.

What to say:

  • 5-star: Thank them by name. Mention something specific from their review if you can. Two sentences max.
  • 4-star: Thank them, then briefly ask what would have made it 5 stars. Future readers see you care.
  • 1-3 star: Acknowledge the issue specifically, apologize sincerely, invite them to email you to make it right. Never argue. Never explain.
