Local SEO Audit Checklist: 10 Things to Fix Today
Ten high-leverage, low-effort fixes you can apply to your local SEO this week. Most take under 30 minutes each, and the top three move rankings within 2-4 weeks.
Most local SEO advice tells you to do everything. This list tells you what to do first, in order of leverage. Knock these out in a week and you'll be ahead of 80% of your direct competitors.
1. Match your NAP exactly across the web
NAP = Name, Address, Phone. Pick one canonical version and use it identically everywhere: GBP, website footer, Yelp, Apple Maps, Bing Places, industry directories. Inconsistent NAP is the most common ranking blocker.
2. Add structured data to your website
Use the LocalBusiness schema. Most CMS plugins have it built in. If you're on a custom site, ten minutes of copy-paste from schema.org/LocalBusiness, populated with your real data. Test with Google's Rich Results Test before going live.
3. Embed a Google Map on your homepage
Yes, in 2026 this still matters. The embed creates a clear association between your site and your GBP. Use the official Google Maps embed, not a screenshot, not a third-party widget.
4. Rewrite your title tags to include city
Your homepage title should be: `Service · City · Brand`. Example: "Emergency Plumber · Austin · Acme Plumbing". This single change typically moves a homepage 2-4 positions for "service near me" queries within 30 days.
5. Audit your reviews — reply to every single one
Not just the negatives. Every single review, including 5-star ones. Reply within 48 hours. Replies are a ranking signal AND a conversion signal. Customers reading reviews check whether the business engages.
6. Get rid of duplicate listings
Search "[your business name] [your city]" and see if multiple GBP listings exist. Duplicates split your review velocity and confuse Google. Claim and merge or report them.
7. Speed up your homepage
Run your homepage through PageSpeed Insights. If your Largest Contentful Paint is above 2.5s, fix it before anything else. Mobile speed is in the top 5 ranking factors for local search and has been since 2021.
8. Add at least 5 GBP posts
A GBP with zero posts looks abandoned to Google's algorithm. Five posts gets you out of the "stale" bucket. After that, maintain one post per week.
9. Build 3-5 local citations on real directories
Forget the spammy "submit to 500 directories" services. Pick 3-5 directories that real customers in your industry actually use (e.g., for plumbers: HomeAdvisor, Angi, BBB, Yelp, Nextdoor). Quality > quantity is dramatically true here.
10. Set up Google Search Console
Free. Tells you exactly which queries surface your site, your average position, and which pages get impressions but no clicks. Without it you're flying blind.
